Conor Benn is understood to have hired one of the world’s most prominent sports lawyers, Mike Morgan, in efforts to clear his name for the failed drugs test that triggered the cancellation of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr.

Sources have indicated the 26-year-old turned last month to the London-based Morgan Sports Law, who worked with both Chris Froome and Tyson Fury when they faced doping investigations.

When contacted by the Mail on Sunday, Morgan declined to confirm or deny that he had taken on the case.

Benn has maintained he is clean in the wake of revelations on MailOnline that he tested positive via the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association for Clomifene on September 1, but the fighter is yet to provide an explanation for how the female fertility substance appeared in his system.

It is also unclear if he requested a test on his B sample, although it is standard practice for anti-doping agencies to put a timeframe on exercising such an option, with UK Anti-Doping, for instance, setting a deadline of 10 calendar days from the date of notification, which in Benn’s case was issued on September 23.

VADA have not responded to a request for clarity on their own B sample procedures.

Morgan famously cleared Froome from a potential two-year ban after the cyclist exceeded the permitted levels of the asthma medication salbutamol, with the World Anti-Doping Agency ultimately satisfied after a nine-month investigation in 2018 that it did not constitute an adverse analytical finding .

Morgan was also recruited by Fury ahead of his backdated ban for a nandrolone positive, and has previously helped clear the cyclist Lizzie Armistead of a charge for three ‘whereabouts failures’ within a 12-month period.

Speaking at a tour with Chris Eubank Snr in Coventry on Friday, Benn’s father Nigel Benn was convinced his son would be exonerated.

He said: ‘I am behind my son. If I thought my son ever took performance enhancing drugs I would hang him out to dry.

‘I have worked hard to get my name where it is today but I know my son. He is a dedicated fighter. He wouldn’t take drugs.

‘We will get to the bottom of this scientifically, so I am not going to say anything that contradicts what will come out. Me and my wife will stay out of this.

‘Let the lawyers and scientists deal with this, but I just pray to the god that the apologies are as loud as the media that threw my son under the bus.’

Benn’s promoters Matchroom have been approached for comment.
