Food sector calls for government action on UK food security | News

British Weekly September 25, 2025 2 minutes read

27 companies from the entire food supply chain have asked the government to respond to British food production.

The companies, including the large multipliers, suppliers such as noble foods, 2 sisters and barfoots, and the NFU, wrote to the Minister of Peasants.

You have shown how Defra and the broader government can work with you to achieve growth in the food sector.

After the NFU has convened a round table for food resilience, in which Angela Eagle's MP took part in her second day as Defra Secretary together with representatives of retailers, processors and agricultural companies.

“Food is such a fundamental part of our life and our society, and the government rightly said that” nutritional security is national security, “said NFU President Tom Bradshaw.” We want to go on – we want to be a driving force for the economic renewal of the UK, and every person who has signed this letter is true that our sector has a real growth potential. “

The roundtable emphasized the need for a clear ambition of local food production, just as for the environment by legally prescribed goals, said the NFU.

It also called for the developing food strategy to concentrate on the resilience of the British food system.

In the letter to the minister, three areas were described from which the food companies support this work, including changes to the planning system, improved tax relief to promote investments and growth and to enable access to the right people for qualified work.

“Resilience and trust have to underpin this with a clear framework for the enabling of politics and targeted investments,” said Bradshaw. “The determination of defined state goals for the production of domestic food provides the certainty and direction that our farmers and producers need – to reconcile food production with the already existing goals to protect the environment.

“The British food sector is ready to work with the new Minister of Agriculture in order to deliver this to strengthen our nutritional security, help to alleviate some of the current inflation pressure and to build up a flourishing rural economy.”

The profitability of agriculture continues

This happens when new studies have shown that profitability in the combinable harvest sector is expected to fall under its long -term trend due to lower incomes and higher costs.

Research from the Nix Farm Management paperback also showed that the cattle sectors perform relatively well based on high prices and low feed costs, but with much less subsidy.

The milk sector should continue a period of relatively strong profits with a high milk price, he added.

Many farmers, especially arable farmers, would be dependent on their diversified activities this season, with many resources being removed from the benefit of food production.
